Players can operate the game in one of two modes. As part of its tenth anniversary, the game was re-released on Septemfor Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. A remake of the game was made for the Wii, entitled Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop, and released in February 2009, with a mobile phone version also created. Originally released on August 8, 2006, the game became a critical and commercial success, leading it to being introduced as part of the Xbox 360 " Platinum Hits" lineup, while also spawning three sequels – Dead Rising 2 in September 2010, Dead Rising 3 in November 2013, and Dead Rising 4 in December 2016. Even though players must complete major missions to advance the main story, the sandbox element of the game means that optional tasks can be done, with several additional endings available if the player does not complete certain conditions towards the true ending of the story. The players find themselves surviving by salvaging various items for weapons to fight zombies and hostile survivors, also known as psychopaths, whilst rescuing friendly survivors that are also trapped in the shopping mall, and attempting to uncover the truth behind the incident. The game's story sees players controlling Frank West, a photo journalist, who gets trapped in a shopping mall within the fictional town of Willamette, Colorado, that is suffering from a zombie outbreak.
